Talking about lighting, it can either be natural or artificial. Natural light is the source of lighting which is direct or comes from the sun. Natural light, though brighter than artificial lights are available only during the daytime and thus it is not enough to light up the entire hotel. The advantage of artificial lights over natural lighting is that artificial lights are available at all times of the day; there is a variety of lights to choose from, and they are easy to install too.

When thinking of lighting in a hotel, it is important to take into consideration the diversity of events that take place in a given space, be it a daytime conference or an evening wedding. Nowadays, hotels have to maintain a wide range of facilities like entrance and lobby, reception area, restaurants, hallways ad corridors, guest rooms, conference rooms, party halls, as well as poolside areas, and other recreational spaces. Thus, it is important to choose the right type of lighting to light up various spaces within a hotel. One must also be able to adjust the lighting to change the color and ambiance of a space.

Entrance and Lobby: This area needs to be well-lit and illuminated. The type of lighting that can be used are high-power pendant lamps, ceiling-mounted chandeliers, wall lighting, and false ceiling. This can be done to create a welcoming and cheerful atmosphere so that the guests feel comfortable.

Reception Area: This area should also be well lit but not too brightly. This area should be lit in a way that looks welcoming to the hotel guests. The lighting can be done by downlights and recessed lighting fixtures, or LED light strips can be placed along with the panel on top of the corner.

Restaurants: Restaurants are often dimly lit in order to create an atmosphere that is calm and relaxing. It should also be attractive. Downlights, ceiling-mounted chandeliers, slim bar panels can be installed to provide a variety of light sources.

Conference Rooms: Since these are used for various purposes like conference meetings, exhibitions, private parties, etc, good general lighting should come from all the ceilings. Lighting that can be adjusted according to the function taking place must be used. For instance, a conference room should be lit in a way that makes the environment energetic and productive. Whereas at a private party, we expect the environment to be cheerful and lively.

Hallways and Corridors: These areas should be supplemented with enough lighting. The hallways and corridors lead guests to their rooms, stairs, exit ways, etc. These areas should not be dark and people must be able to see the room number on the doors. Wall lights, hanging lights, and ceiling-mounted fixtures can be used for this purpose.

Guest rooms: Chandeliers and recessed lights can be used in a hotel room for general lighting purposes. For task lighting, table lamps, floor lamps can be used. Warm colored lighting produces a relaxing effect that is important to provide a comfortable experience to the guests in a hotel room.

Bathrooms: Bathrooms should be properly illuminated with the right kind of lighting. When selecting lighting fixtures to be used in the bathroom of the hotel room, make sure that the fixtures are resistant to water, dust, and moisture. Lighting should also be covered with a shade in bathrooms.

Choice of color also plays a crucial role when deciding the lighting fixtures for a hotel room. The use of warm white or yellow light sources in the hotel room will have a relaxing effect on your guests. That’s exactly what they need when they are looking for a comfortable stay-cation.

When selecting fixtures to be used for the lighting of the hotel room, it is important to take into consideration the overall design and colors of the room.

Control of the general lighting should be at the entrance of the room. The placement of the control should be such that the guests are able to turn on the lights as soon as they enter the room. Similarly, guests should be able to turn off the lights with the key on the side of the bed so that they need not get off the bed to turn off the lights at bedtime.

Table lamps can be placed on the side tables on both sides of the bed. Lamps on both sides should have a separate controller as one person might want to read a book before bed while the other might want to just sleep peacefully with the lights off.

Although comfort comes first in a hotel room, we should not forget about energy saving. It will be a good idea to use energy-efficient lighting technologies throughout the room.
